Welcome to the Snowsports Business Report
Snowsports Business Report (SBR) is a free, digital-only, B2B publication dedicated to providing essential business news and analysis for the winter outdoor industry, including hardgoods and softgoods brands, ski resorts, snow specialty retail shops and the trade associations that promote snowsports around the globe.
Our coverage includes financial analysis of public companies, deep dives on mergers and acquisitions, the most recent C-suite appointments, executive Q&As, feature stories, and all the latest happenings from a variety of snowsports stakeholders.
Snowsports Business Report is owned and operated by Eric Smith, an award-winning writer who most recently worked as senior business editor at the B2B trade publication SGB Media.
Smith is uniquely qualified to tell the stories of the snowsports industry, having won the 2020 Harold S. Hirsch Award for Words from the North American Snowsports Journalists Association for his exhaustive coverage of the “business of snow.” (Click here for the announcement.)
Created by the founder of the White Stag clothing company to promote professionalism in winter sports coverage, the awards “recognize creativity and excellence in editorial and artistic content in both print and broadcast journalism.”
Here is a link to the five-story portfolio Smith submitted for the awards — all published in SGB Executive — including articles on snow sports brands expanding to China, a case study of Burton Snowboards, how ski resorts prospered during the start to the previous ski season, the continued rise of backcountry skiing and how winter sports stakeholders are working to grow the sports.
About the founder
Eric Smith hails from the skiing hotbed of Memphis, Tenn., where he first made turns at Ski Mt. Moriah, the famed ski area with the deepest snow totals and steepest slopes in all the Mid-South.
OK, maybe there’s no skiing in Memphis. Smith, who did grow up in the Bluff City, actually learned to ski at Sandia Peak in New Mexico. He now lives outside Boulder, Colorado, with his wife, Sandy, and their rescue dog, Cosmo.
Smith is a seasoned business journalist who might have been late to winter sports — he is from the South, after all — but has embraced reporting on the industry since getting his break freelancing for the former Snow Show Daily at the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Snow Shows (now operated by Outdoor Retailer). He is committed to telling the stories that go beyond product. Because making the coolest ski or snowboard or boot or helmet or goggle doesn’t matter if you don’t have the right business model to make, distribute, market and sell it.
